Vitamin D, The Sun, and Self Tanners  —— Back in 1999 there was a study done on sunscreen blocking out ultraviolet rays creating Vitamin D. People were worried that if they use sunscreen it will reduce the amount of Vitamin D their body can take in. They study found that regular sunscreen users were not Vitamin D deficient. 

They say self tanners are the only way to get a tan that is safe for the skin. All self tanners contain the same ingredient, dihydroxyacetone (DHA). It chemically turn the skin brown. The higher the concentration the faster the skin turns color. The key to a good result is the application. When self tanning, you want to avoid the palms and the armpits and where to start and stop with the self tanner. Getting the application right can be tricky. 

Just note if you choose to use self tanner, whether it contains a sunscreen or not, self tanned brown skin will not protect from the sun. 

Tips for Self Tanning:

  • It takes time to apply self tanner, its better to apply at night time. 
  • Self tanners grab on to surface skin cells, and you may have more in some areas than others. 
  • To help achieve a smooth application, take a shower or bath and exfoliate the skin. Pay extra attention to your knees, ankles, feet, elbows, and neck. 
  • Apply a thin layer of moisturizer to help the self tanner glides on smoothly and stick to rough patches. 
  • Try to take a cool shower or bath because perspiration can make self tanners streak. 
  • It’s best to apply the self tanner while naked, and old bathing suit can help determine where you want your tan to be. 
  • Apply to one section at a time.
  • Try using gloves to prevent the tanner from getting on your palms. 
  • Wait at least 15 minutes before getting dressed. 

Remember skin care products such as AHA’s, BHA, topical scrubs, Retin- A, and topical disinfectants can affect self tanners action on your skin or even eliminate the color. Generally it will wear away on its own in about 3-4 days as the surface layers begin to shed. 

If you think it is a inconvenient to take the time to apply self tanner, just keep in mind that it takes MANY hours in the sun to achieve a bronze tan and with self tanners there is no risk of wrinkles or skin cancer. One million new cases of skin cancer are diagnosed each year. We are trying to end cancer, not start new cases! Forget the sun bed and sleep in self tan! 




The self tanner that I like to use is called Tanwise Dark Bronzing. Now, this stuff is really strong in color. I have to be careful when I apply it because I really don’t need that much at all.
